Maritime Dance Performance Group presents Momentum Celebrating a decade of exceptional dance in Halifax Regional Municipality
Friday, May 29, at 8:00 PM & Saturday, May 30, at 2:00 PM and 8:00 PM Tickets $12 Students & Seniors/$17 Adults
May 14, 2009
For Immediate Release (Dartmouth, NS) In celebration of the Maritime Dance Performance Group’s tenth anniversary, the Company is thrilled to present a full length contemporary dance showcase titled Momentum on Friday, May 29th at 8:00 PM, and Saturday, May 30th at 2:00 PM & 8:00 PM at Alderney Landing Theatre. Momentum will feature eleven pieces created for the company by eleven professional choreographers in our community, as well as a guest performance by Coastal Dance Theatre.
This season’s line up reads like a who’s who of the local dance community, and will feature work by Jacinte Armstrong, Kendra Armstrong, Rhonda Baker, Cory Bowles, Susanne Chui, Melanie Ferro, Rachel Franco, Kelly Horne, Ruth-Ellen Kroll Jackson, Véronique MacKenzie, and Kathleen Vessey, including seven premieres.
Members of Verve Mwendo Dance Company, Jacinte Armstrong and Cory Bowles have been choreographing for Performance Group for the past seven years and will both premiere new work in the show. Armstrong has created a quirky, canine inspired (yet surprisingly human) piece, while Bowles’ piece will catch you off guard with its hard, heavy, in-your-face attitude.
One of the highlights of Momentum is Kendra Armstrong’s upbeat and entertaining work which takes us on a journey with four women who all have one common thread; a man they are sick of.
Rhonda Baker, one of the Maritime Dance Performance Group’s original founding members, and recent graduate from the School of Toronto Dance Theatre, has returned to present her physical piece Elation; Upstairs. The Breaks; Bottom Floor.
Susanne Chui offers Lost & Found, a soft, intimate duet with movement that reaches and falls through space, while Rachel Franco will present an energetic and intensely athletic piece in her signature theatrical style.
Mocean Dance's Melanie Ferro premieres a stirring solo and duet, while Kelly Horne, Founder and Director of the Company, will present Tour De Force, an anniversary piece celebrating Performance Group’s exceptional achievement in dance over the past ten years.
Ruth-Ellen Kroll Jackson (who returned to Nova Scotia a number of years ago after a successful career touring with prestigious companies out of New York City such as the Parsons Dance Company and The Martha Graham Dance Ensemble) will present her compelling work from repertoire, We Are Underestimated, which was makes a strong assertion on our uninformed youth with respect to current events.
Local dance maven Véronique MacKenzie, who is widely known throughout the community for her choreographic explorations that dare to be different, presents a wonderfully unique, visually stimulating, dark piece about the fight within.
Performance Group is delighted to showcase An Inescapable Invitation by full company member and 2008 Outstanding Achievement Award recipient, Kathleen Vessey at Momentum. Vessey will be attending the full time pre-professional program at Decidedly Jazz Danceworks starting in September 2009.
At the closing show on Saturday night the Company’s 2009 award winners will be announced; one for Outstanding Achievement and one for Most Improved Dancer.
These stunning young dancers are ready to entertain audiences with their eighth full-length showcase, which covers a wide range of contemporary dance forms; from the engaging to the eccentric, it is interesting and inspiring dance the entire family can enjoy. Please join us in celebrating a decade of exceptional dance in Halifax Regional Municipality.
Momentum hits the stage on Friday, May 29 at 8 PM and Saturday, May 30 at 2 PM and 8 PM. Advance TICKETS ARE NOW ON SALE for all three performances through TICKET PRO 1.888.311.9090 OR WWW.TICKETPRO.CA (service charges apply) or from any member of Performance Group.
